Unidentified Rosy Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Fears of Potential Algae Outbreak

Agencies in Tasmania are working to identify a magenta ooze that has materialized on a secluded beach, with some scientists concerned it could be an algal bloom.

Broad Appearance On Coastline

The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been recorded on areas of another local beach and a separate bay.

Specimens Taken for Examination

Samples have been collected and sent to the regulatory body for examination. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in response to variations in food sources, warmth, precipitation or sunlight".

"These blooms are sometimes called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water crimson," the official noted. "Few algae outbreaks are dangerous, with several kinds serving as a major source of nourishment for marine life in the oceanic food chain."

"The usual source of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."

Increasing Rate Linked to Global Warming

Algae outbreaks happen naturally but their rate has increased in recent years, partly due to climate change and pollution that combine to create food-loaded oceans geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their numbers that interferes with the healthy balance of aquatic systems.

These events have been compared to marine infernos and can continue to grow as long as the environment is suitable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as aquatic animals is eliminated or suffocated, offering more food for the proliferation.

Recent Severe Event in another region

South Australia recently dealt with a severe algae outbreak along its coastal region after a series of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The outbreak caused beachgoers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.

Specialist Assessment on the Current Event

A marine expert, who helped investigate the onset of South Australia's event commented, based on pictures of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".

"There are numerous of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she remarked.

The scientist explained the algae did not create poisons similar to the species involved in the previous harmful event, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.

"It's common to observe a proliferation of sea sparkle after a outbreak of something else, or something like a fish reproduction," she added.

Calls for Response and Community Health

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, stated it seemed the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to like situations overseas.

"Thus we needs to send a firm alert here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to study the examples we've taken and we need to notify the community here," she emphasized.

Henley said she had concerns for people's well-being after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.

Claims of Deceased Animals and Appeals for Government Response

An advocacy organization has stated dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist labeling the event as an "natural disaster" and urging the government head to inspect and "assume command the response that officials must be doing".

"Officials needs to understand this is a disaster in the happening, economically as well as environmentally."

Leadership Reaction

Speaking to the media, the leader commented he was not aware of any relationships between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, saying laboratory analysis was required before conclusions could be reached.

"We must make certain our rivers and seas are environmentally safe and sustainable," he added.

"Our coastal assets across the state are our treasures and we need to make sure the community and our economy can live together to enjoy our seas effectively and in a lasting way."
