The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis predicted his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with the government.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

The evident and clear reality that Christ from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
