Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
