RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
