A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
